London’s Last Working Windmill
Brixton Windmill, Windmill Gardens, Brixton, built in 1816, is a unique piece of London’s history in Lambeth.
Brixton Windmill, also known as Ashby’s Mill, is the only surviving windmill in London still capable of milling flour. Built in 1816 and leased to the Ashby family who were millers producing stone-ground wholemeal flour.
The windmill has been restored multiple times since 1816, The sails, cap and tower were all repaired, and the 1902 millstones were converted to run on electrical power. The Friends of windmill gardens started grinding flour in 2014 and training volunteer millers.
