Herne Hill
Walk the rainbow in Lambeth and celebrate people’s difference no matter who they love or how they feel about themselves.Â
In 2019, Lambeth unveiled the UKs first rainbow crossings outside Brockwell Park, in Herne Hill SE24. The two crossings were installed to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and to celebrate inclusivity and diversity within the borough.Â

The Rainbow’s History
Where did the famous 6 stripes come from?Â
An American artist called Gilbert Baker made a design of originally 8 stripes now 6 to be used on gay Freedom Day in 1978. The stripes became a popular symbol (pride flag) for people trying to get rights for those in the LGBTQ+ community.Â
What do the stripes mean?Â
The original 8 striped flag included pink and turquoise, which were later removed due to fabric availability and design practicality, resulting in the 6-striped version commonly used today.Â
Red – LifeÂ
Orange – Healing Â
Yellow – SunlightÂ
Green – NatureÂ
Blue – HarmoneyÂ
Violet – SpiritÂ
You can find other rainbow crossing around the world – including, New York in the United States and Toronto in Canada.Â
