Lambeth as we know it today is a bustling and vibrant place, but this wasn’t always the case. It used to move at a much slower pace. In 1062 Lambeth used to be known as Lambehitha. “Landing place for Lambs”. The name’s origin re ects the area’s historical connection to the lamb trade and its role as a riverside landing place.

How Lambeth Got Its Name

The origins of the name Lambeth stretch back nearly a thousand years. First recorded in 1062 as Lambehitha, the name comes from Old English and means “landing place of lambs”

It referred to a riverside harbour or wharf where lambs were either brought into the city or shipped out.

In 1255 the name Lambehitha was shortened to what we now know as Lambeth.
