Great North Woods
Not many people know the history of the Great North Woods as much of its glorious woodlands were lost due to development of suburban neighbourhoods in the 1830’s.
The Great North Woods, spread over 5 London boroughs including Lambeth. From New Cross to Crystal Palace and then south-east towards Elmers End, and west towards Norbury.
A vast expanse of woodlands, wood pasture, meadows and farmland. There are many places in Lambeth that still contain historical remnants of the “great north wood”,
Streatham Common, Knights Hill Wood, Norwood Park, Tivoli Park, Unigate Wood and West Norwood Cemetery. Are places you will find many trees standing in our parks, gardens, natural green spaces and streets.
London Wildlife Trust have championed the Great North Wood since the 1980s and are doing extensive work to bring awareness and revive the woods. Find out more information here
