Peter Tattersall
“That one act of kindness completely changed my life. And so my life of ice skating began at age 58.”
Peter's story
Peter came to the ice completely by accident – his daughter’s 11th birthday party brought him to Streatham Ice Rink, and a few simple tips from a staff member set him on a path he’s never looked back from. He started skating at 58 and hasn’t stopped since.
Now 71, Peter skates two or three times a week on the Learn to Skate programme. But he doesn’t just skate for himself – he’s become a quiet force of encouragement on the ice, cheering on beginners and even persuading parents off the sidelines and onto the rink with their children.
“I love to tell beginners how well they’re doing, because it’s harder than it looks. And it transforms them from uncertain to joyful in seconds.”
Peter’s motivation runs deeper too. Watching his father and father-in-law lose their mobility in later life spurred him to stay strong and active. Ice skating is his answer – and he’s passionate about sharing that message with other older skaters.
